Mont Rose is the largest mountain massif in the Alps and the second highest in Italy, as well as that with the highest average altitude, including nine of the twenty highest peaks in the Alps. It is located in the north-west Alps (the Pennine Alps) along the border that separates Italy and Switzerland and between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Aosta Valley.
Dufourspitze, at 4,634 metres (15,201 ft) above sea level, is the highest peak of the group. Upon another peak, Signalkuppe, you can find Margherita Hut, the highest mountain refuge in Europe at 4,554 metres (14,941 ft) above sea level, once the site of an important medical research centre. The massif is visible from a relatively large part of the Po Valley.
